ILWU Maui Division Director Willie Kennison greets Mayor Charmaine Tavares on stage following his announcement of the union's endorsement of her bid for re-election at a campaign event March 3, 2010.

On March 3, 2010, ILWU Maui Division Director, Willie Kennison announced the endorsement of Mayor Charmaine Tavares for re-election.  The endorsement by ILWU came as a result of approvals by the union’s Maui Division Political Action Committee (PAC), the Maui Division Executive Board, and the ILWU’s State PAC. “Mayor Tavares has stood by our labor employees and important industries such as tourism and agriculture from day one,” said Kennison. “Her support has not wavered. The fact that she was endorsed at all three review levels shows that we consider her leadership important to the future of Maui County.” According to Kennison ILWU has over 7,000 members in the county’s islands of Maui, Molokai and Lanai.

Mayor Charmaine Tavares received the endorsement of the State of Hawaii Organization of Police Officers (SHOPO) on Friday, July 23, 2010. SHOPO has 2,800 members statewide with nearly 400 in Maui County.  In making the announcement, SHOPO President Tenari Ma’afala called Mayor Tavares’ ability to build positive working relationships as a key to the union’s decision. “We have seen Mayor Tavares take difficult and complex situations and find agreeable solutions between people,” said Ma’afala.  “There is no doubt that she has the experience to do the job. What makes her stand out is how genuine she is. She is definitely the mayor for this county and we look forward to many more years of working with Mayor Tavares.”  “I’m honored to receive the endorsement of SHOPO,” said Mayor Tavares. “The men and women of SHOPO work very hard to keep our citizens safe and every day they put their lives on the line to protect us. I have great respect for what they do to help our community and look forward to continuing to work together for the benefit of our county.”
